New Drug Approved for Advanced Colon Cancer

A new drug has received fast-track approval to treat advanced colon cancer, the Food and Drug Administration announced today (Sept. 27).

The drug, Stivarga, has been approved to treat patients with colorectal cancer that has progressed after treatment and spread to other parts of the body, the FDA said.

The drug, manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, works by blocking several enzymes that promote cancer growth. The FDA said it received a fast-track review designated for drugs that offer major advances in treatment or that provide treatment when no adequate therapy exists.

In a study, patients taking the drug lived about six weeks longer than patients taking a placebo.

"Stivarga is the latest colorectal cancer treatment to demonstrate an ability to extend patients' lives and is the second drug approved for patients with colorectal cancer in the past two months," said Dr. Richard Pazdur, director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Last month the FDA approved the Sanofi-Regeneron drug Zaltrap for use in combination with a FOLFIRI (folinic acid, fluorouracil and irinotecan) chemotherapy regimen to treat adults with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and in women and the third leading cause of cancer death in men and in women in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 143,400 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and 51,690 will die from the disease in 2012, the government estimates.

Stivarga was evaluated in a study of 760 patients with previously treated metastatic colorectal cancer. Patients were randomly assigned to receive Stivarga or a placebo in addition to the best supportive care, which included treatments to help manage symptoms and side effects of cancer. Patients received treatment until their cancers progressed or side effects became unacceptable.

Patients treated with Stivarga and supportive care lived about 6.4 months, compared with five months for patients treated with placebo plus supportive care. Those who received Stivarga experienced a delay in tumor growth for about two months, compared with 1.7 months for patients receiving the placebo.

The Stivarga label warns that severe and fatal liver toxicity occurred in patients treated with Stivarga during clinical studies. The most common side effects reported in patients treated with Stivarga included weakness or fatigue, loss of appetite, hand-foot syndrome (also called palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia), diarrhea, mouth sores (mucositis), weight loss, infection, high blood pressure, and changes in voice volume or quality (dysphonia), the FDA said.

Pass it on: The FDA has approved a new drug to treat advanced colorectal cancer.

To Unlock A Full Price AT&T iPhone 5, Just Restore It In iTunes

IMG_0358If you have bought an AT&T iPhone 5 without a contract over the past few days, chances are that you want to unlock it to use it on another carrier. The traditional process involves filling out an online form on AT&T's website, sending a fax (yes, a fax) to AT&T, waiting 5 to 7 days and restoring your phone. It turns out that it is much easier than that: just restore the phone in iTunes and it will be unlocked. We have confirmed the process with AT&T's technical support and successfully tried it with a T-Mobile SIM card. After restoring the device in iTunes, the user is prompted with the usual unlocking message: "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked." This message wasn't enough for me though. I need more proof that I could use the iPhone on every carrier and abroad.

Tokyoflash releases the Kisai Logo, treads the line between confusing and amazing (video)

Image

Extraordinary Japanese watchmaker Tokyoflash adds to its line of outlandish timepieces with the Kisai Logo. Much like its brethren, its face can't be easily read by the uninitiated, with a block representing hours running around digitally displayed minutes. Wrapped in a classy stainless steel and colored acetate, it's got an EL backlight for use in the dark and a hidden binary mode for demonstrating your intellectual credentials. Like the company's other devices, it's available for the first 48 hours of its life for $99 (€78 or £63) before September 27th, when prices increase to $139 (€110, £88) and you can find plenty of explanatory details in the video after the break.

Best constraint on mass of photons, using observations of super-massive black holes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A global team of scientists, including a University of Mississippi physicist, has determined the best constraint on the mass of photons so far, using observations of super-massive black holes.

The research findings appear in the September issue of Physical Review Letters. "Black hole bombs and photon mass bounds" is co-authored by Emanuele Berti, UM assistant professor of physics and astronomy, along with fellow researchers Paolo Pani, Vitor Cardoso, Leonardo Gualtieri and Akihiro Ishibashi.

This paper details how the scientists, who work in Portugal, Italy, Japan and the U.S., found a way to use astrophysical observations to test a fundamental aspect of the Standard Model -- namely, that photons have no mass -- better than anyone before.

"The test works like this: if photons had a mass, they would trigger an instability that would spin down all black holes in the universe," Berti said. "But astronomers tell us that the gigantic, super-massive black holes at galactic centers are spinning, so this instability cannot be too strong.

"The mass of the photon, if it has a mass at all, must be extremely tiny."

"Ultralight photons with nonzero mass would produce a 'black hole bomb': a strong instability that would extract energy from the black hole very quickly," said Pani, the paper's lead author. "The very existence of such particles is constrained by the observation of spinning black holes. With this technique, we have succeeded in constraining the mass of the photon to unprecedented levels: the mass must be one hundred billion of billions times smaller than the present constraint on the neutrino mass, which is about two electron-volts."

The results of this study can be used to investigate the existence of new particles, such as those possibly contributing to the dark matter that is the subject of a search using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva. CERN is the site where the breakthrough discovery of the Higgs boson was reported earlier this year.

"That discovery filled one of the most important gaps in our understanding of the standard model of particle physics, because it explains how particles get their mass," Gualtieri said. "However, not all particles have mass. Physics makes progress by testing every nook and cranny of our commonly accepted theories. So, if we believe that a particle has no mass, we'd better test this idea with precise experiments.

"Observations of super-massive black holes may provide new insights which are not accessible in laboratory experiments. This would certainly be exciting. Perhaps these new frontiers in astrophysics will give us a clearer understanding of the microscopic universe."

"Paolo, Vitor, Leonardo and I are all part of an IRSES Network on 'Numerical Relativity and High-Energy Physics' funded by the European Union," Berti said. "Paolo presented a talk on this work at the first meeting of our network that was held in Aveiro, Portugal in July. This network will be used in the next four years to strengthen our collaboration even further."

Pani, who received the Fubini Prize from the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics for the best Ph.D. thesis nationwide in 2011, is a post-doctoral researcher at Instituto Superior T?cnico in Lisbon, Portugal, supported by a European Marie Curie Fellowship.

"Paolo started working with us when he visited Ole Miss in 2007," Berti said. "We have been working together on this particular project since January 2012, and we have co-authored nine papers so far."

A post-doctorate researcher at UM before returning to his native Portugal, Cardoso is a professor at Instituto Superior Tecnico, where his group is supported by a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant. Cardoso and Berti have published 37 papers together over the past decade.

"Gualtieri and I were both Ph.D. students under the supervision of Valeria Ferrari in Rome, Italy," Berti said. "We have also been collaborating for more than a decade. Leonardo is now a research professor ('ricercatore') in Rome."

Ishibashi works at the KEK Theory Center and at the Department of Physics of Kinki University in Japan, where physicists at the center are studying in great depth phenomena similar to the one described in the PRL paper.

This study was funded, in part, by National Science Foundation Grant No. PHY-0900735 and by CAREER Grant No. PHY-1055103.

Spending Time With the Kids by Getting Out of the House | Dadding

store1 300x300 What Kids, Parenting, and Best Buy all Have in CommonI grew up in a neighborhood where my parents could let all of us kids out of the house and into the neighborhood without many fears of bad things happening. My sisters and I all had friends up and down that street and we all got along and we all spent most of our days outside.

That doesn?t seem to be the case anymore. We can let Addie loose out into the circle and occasionally we let her walk two houses further to one of her friend?s houses, but for most of the time we have to be with Addie and Vivi when they want out of the house. Just as it is important that Casey get out of the house on occasion, it is probably even more important that our kids get out of the house as well. For both their sakes?and my sake.

Here?s what I have noticed during my stints as a temporary single parent over the past year. Taking the kids, especially Vivi, to the park or even just to the store makes parenting much easier. Sure, there?s the initial packing everything into a diaper bag and loading the kids into the car, which can be a nightmare for parents like me who don?t do the packing and loading thing all that often, but the rewards far outweigh that burden.

Deciding whether to pack up the kids or to sit at home trying to find activities is a pretty easy decision for me, because spending a full day one-on-one with just Vivi can be pretty difficult. The baby (alright, she?s a toddler but I don?t like admitting it) doesn?t like to play with her toys and she gets bored pretty easily, and there?s only so much Sesame Street that she can watch before I feel guilty for plopping her in front of the TV. There are all kinds of easy places that I can take this little one that aren?t even baby or kid oriented that will keep her fascinated and entertained. Using the afternoon to go to a local Best Buy without any real purpose other than to let Vivi play with all the cellphones has been a great way to keep Vivi entertained and to give me some relief from trying to constantly entertain her. Plus, I get to daydream about the TV I have been promising myself for the last three years that I will eventually buy and put in my family?s loft (or my bedroom).

I?ve also taken the kid to Walmart so we can take a walk down the Oreo Cookie aisle followed by a little stop in the toy aisles. It has always worked like a charm and Vivi comes away entertained and I usually end up with Oreo Cookies, that?s what we call a win/win. (Unless those Oreo Cookies are the new Candy Corn Oreos, those aren?t nearly as good as I expected them to be.)

The Best Buy strategy hasn?t always worked with Addie however, because she isn?t interested in playing with all the cellphones at Best Buy. She already knows the cellphones at the store aren?t toys and she doesn?t care about the latest and greatest in TV land. In fact, she hates going to what she calls the ?daddy store.? When that happens I just adjust and we take a trip to a pet shop, the Humane Society, or a Halloween store. Addie gets some time out of the house and away from the TV, and I get to decide which mask I?m going to secretly buy so I can scare the crap out of Addie when I wake her up for school on Halloween morning.

Chinese Court Sentences Ex-Police Chief to 15 Years

BEIJING?China moved towards concluding its political crisis and setting up a once-a-decade leadership change, when a court handed a 15-year jail sentence to the former police chief of Chongqing city who triggered turmoil in the Communist Party elite.

Wang Lijun was found guilty of defection, bribery, abuse of power, and "bending the law for selfish ends" following his two-day trial last week, the state-run Xinhua news agency said Monday.

"Wang, Chongqing's former vice mayor and police chief, was charged with several crimes and received a combined punishment for all offenses," Xinhua said.

Mr. Wang could have faced the death penalty, according to lawyers and legal experts. Instead, he was treated with relative leniency because prosecutors noted several mitigating factors in his case, including the help he provided in convicting the wife of his boss, Bo Xilai, for the murder of a British businessman.

The court's announcement clears the way for Chinese authorities to declare their decision on whether to press criminal charges against Mr. Bo, the former party leader of Chongqing, who has been under investigation by the party's internal disciplinary body.

Mr. Bo, once a candidate for promotion to China's top leadership this year, advocated a strong role for the state in the economy and society, and courted controversy by overseeing a Maoist revival movement as Party chief of Chongqing.

U.S. officials should be relieved that Mr. Wang escaped execution, as the Obama administration faced criticism from some Republican lawmakers earlier this year for not offering Mr. Wang asylum either on humanitarian or intelligence grounds after he fled to a U.S. consulate in the southwestern city of Chengdu in February.

The party leadership is expected to announce soon the dates for a plenum?a meeting of the roughly 300-strong Central Committee?followed by a bigger meeting, the 18th Party Congress, at which President Hu Jintao and other leaders are due to retire from their party posts.

Those meetings were both expected to take place in the fall, but party insiders say announcement of the exact dates has been delayed by internal debate over how to deal with Mr. Bo.

Some observers expect an announcement this week because a weeklong public holiday begins Oct. 1, China's National Day. Several hotels housing the 2,270 delegates to the Congress, which usually lasts about a week, said they hadn't been given exact dates for the meeting, but had reserved rooms for most of October.

One hotel said it had reserved rooms for delegates from Oct. 15 to 31. Another said Oct. 11 to 25. The Congress has been held as early as September and as late as November in the last 15 years, but the timing has always been announced in late August or early September following a meeting of the Politburo?the Party's top 25 leaders.

Mr. Bo's supporters have argued that he should face internal disciplinary measures but shouldn't be subjected to criminal charges, which would almost certainly result in a prison term, given China's conviction rate of about 98%.

But the likelihood of Mr. Wang going to trial appeared to increase last week when an official account of the proceeding suggested that Mr. Bo had interfered in the case of the murdered Briton, Neil Heywood.

Players in China's Leadership Purge

Read more about the players in the case.

That account, published by the state-run Xinhua news agency, didn't mention Mr. Bo by name but said the unnamed leader of the party in Chongqing had rebuked Mr. Wang and slapped him in the face after being told that Mr. Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was a chief suspect in the murder.

Ms. Gu was convicted of the murder last month and given a death penalty with a two-year reprieve?a sentence that is typically commuted to life imprisonment in China.

On March 26, The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that the British government had asked Chinese authorities to investigate Mr. Heywood's death, and to describe his links to the Bo family as well as Mr. Wang's allegations.

Preparations for the party congress may also have been delayed by a two-week absence from official duties this month by Vice President Xi Jinping, the man expected to take over from Mr. Hu, which party insiders have blamed on a back injury sustained while swimming.

Mr. Xi reappeared last weekend and has made two high-profile public appearances since, including a meeting with visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, in an apparent bid to quell rumors about his health and to burnish his diplomatic credentials.

State media reported that in the meeting with Mr. Panetta, Mr. Xi described as a "farce" the Japanese government's purchase of the Senkaku islands, which China calls Diaoyu and claims as part of its territory, from private owners this month.

Also last week, Mr. Xi met Southeast Asian leaders and government ministers at a trade fair in China and sought to reassure them that Beijing was committed to a peaceful resolution of disputes with neighboring countries, according to state media.

"We are firm in safeguarding China's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity and are committed to resolving differences with neighbors concerning territorial and maritime rights and interests peacefully through friendly negotiations," said Mr. Xi, according to Xinhua.

EPA probes bypass pipe at Chevron Calif. refinery

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) ? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a criminal investigation of Chevron after learning the company had been routing pollutants around monitoring equipment at its Richmond refinery and burning them off into the atmosphere.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/SdRplz ) that the Bay Area Air Quality Management District found a pipe inside the refinery used to route hydrocarbon gases around monitoring equipment about two years ago.

The EPA opened the criminal investigation in early 2012. EPA investigators want to know who at Chevron was aware of the bypass pipe and whether it was used to intentionally deceive air pollution regulators.

The probe is unrelated to the Aug. 6 fire at the Richmond plant, which reduced production at one of the nation's largest refineries. Smoke from the fire sent thousands of residents to hospitals with health complaints.

Ovarian Cancer Screening: Simple Two-Minute Questionnaire That ...

? Ovarian Cancer news ? Sep 22, 2012

A simple three-question paper-and-pencil survey, given to women in the doctor?s office in less than two minutes, can effectively identify those who are experiencing symptoms that may indicate ovarian cancer, according to a study by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The study represents the first evaluation of an ovarian cancer symptom-screening tool in a primary care setting among normal-risk women as part of their routine medical-history assessment.

The results are published online in the Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Early detection of ovarian cancer is key to survival. Cure rates for those diagnosed when the disease is confined to the ovary are approximately 70 percent to 90 percent. However, more than 70 percent of women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed with advanced-stage disease, when the survival rate is only 20 percent to 30 percent.

The researchers evaluated the effectiveness and feasibility of several different symptom screening surveys.?

After a few tweaks to formatting and content, the version that proved most effective contained three questions that asked whether a woman was currently experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, all of which have been identified previously as potentially indicative of ovarian cancer:
? Abdominal and/or pelvic pain
? Feeling full quickly and/or unable to eat normally
? Abdominal bloating and/or increased abdomen size

The survey also asked about the frequency and duration of these symptoms: how many days a month and for how long?

?Symptoms such as pelvic pain and abdominal bloating may be a sign of ovarian cancer but they also can be caused by other conditions. What?s important is to determine whether they are current, of recent onset and occur frequently,? said lead author M. Robyn Andersen, Ph.D., a member of the Hutchinson Center?s Public Health Sciences Division. Previous research by Andersen and colleagues has found that about 60 percent of women with early-stage ovarian cancer and 80 percent of women with advanced disease report symptoms that follow this distinctive pattern at the time of diagnosis.

?Women with symptoms that are frequent, continual and new to them in the past year should talk to their doctor, as they may be candidates for further evaluation with ultrasound and blood tests that measure markers of ovarian cancer such as CA-125,? she said. ?Recent research indicates that approximately one in 140 women with symptoms may have ovarian cancer. Aggressive follow-up of these symptoms can lead to diagnosis when ovarian cancer can be caught earlier and more effectively treated.?

The study involved 1,200 women, age 40 to 87, who were seen in a Seattle women?s health clinic. More than half of the study participants reported being postmenopausal and approximately 90 percent were white. About half of the clinic visits were for a current health concern or for follow-up of a health problem reported at an earlier visit. The other half were for routine appointments such as mammography screening.

Of those surveyed, 5 percent had a positive symptom score that indicated the need for further testing. Of this group of about 60 women, one was diagnosed with ovarian cancer shortly thereafter. Of the 95 percent of women who tested negative on the symptom survey, none developed ovarian cancer during a 12-month follow-up period, which attests to the accuracy of the screening tool.

Those who reported current symptoms on the questionnaire or reported other medical concerns scored higher than those who did not. Non-white women were also about twice as likely to receive a positive symptom score as compared to white women.

?If ovarian cancer screening using symptoms is widely adopted, maximizing the specificity of screening programs will be important,? the authors wrote. ?Until better biomarkers are identified and tested, collecting information about symptoms appears to have promise.?
The bottom line, Andersen said, is that the screening tool can be used easily in a primary-care setting, is acceptable to patients and providers, and identifies women with symptoms that are worthy of concern with minimal false-positive results.

The study questionnaire that was tested in the clinic was based on a symptom-screening index developed in 2006 by Andersen and co-author Barbara Goff, M.D., professor and director of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
The National Institute of Nursing Research funded the study.

Yoko Ono joins calls for Pussy Riot's prison release

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Peace activist Yoko Ono on Friday joined the prominent call to free the three imprisoned Pussy Riot punk band members, saluting their stand for freedom of speech after being handed a two-year sentence for staging a "punk prayer" in Moscow's main cathedral.

"I thank Pussy Riot in standing firmly in their belief for freedom of expression and making all women of the world proud to be women," Ono told reporters in New York, flanked by the husband and four year old daughter of one band member.

She awarded the three imprisoned members - Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich - a peace grant established in the name of her late husband, former Beatle John Lennon.

Tolokonnikova's husband, Pyotr Verzilov, accepted Ono's grant on behalf of the three women. He said he and his daughter visited Tolokonnikova in prison for the first time in six months earlier this week, where she is kept with her two fellow band members segregated from other prisoners.

Their daughter had sent her mother scribblings of plans of escape. "For her it has been very emotional," he said, talking of his daughter's drawing, "She breaks down the prison walls and helps Nadia's escape."

Ono joined Madonna, Burmese opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi and rights groups that have also stood up against the band's imprisonment.

Speaking just days ahead of an October 1 appeal by the band, when Amnesty International and other groups hope thousands of people will rally in dozens of cities, Ono said she "wanted to express my love and respect for them, I want to work for the immediate release from the prison they are in."

The jail sentences - for the crime of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred after the band stormed the altar of Moscow's main cathedral calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of President Vladimir Putin - has drawn sharp international criticism.

Opposition groups say the case was part of a Kremlin crackdown on dissent. Putin has declined to comment on the ruling, but has suggested abuses committed against the Russian Orthodox Church during the Soviet era made Pussy Riot's protest particularly offensive.

In response to the peace grant from Ono, Verzilov said his wife hoped the world was returning to the activism of her time in the 1960s and 1970s.

"Nadia wants people to continue to actively keep fighting and supporting the cause and to learn it is important to stand up for values that are crucial to you, no matter the price, no matter the cost," he said.

On Thursday Verzilov met with U.S. lawmakers and aides who have drafted legislation, known as the Magnitsky bill, to impose U.S. sanctions against any Russian officials involved in the prosecution of the band.

He did not expect the October 1 appeal to cause significant change to the two year sentences. Nor did he think Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's comments last week that the band should be freed would carry much weight. Hence he asked for international support.

Amnesty International have listed the three women on their Prisoners Of Conscience list that aims to free those wrongly imprisoned for their political, religious and other beliefs.

"At it's core this case is about three young women who are in jail for the crime of singing a song," Amnesty International USA Executive Director Suzanne Nossel told reporters. "Anybody can relate to this case and to these women and you cant help but feel your heart tugged."

Verzilov said that even now, from prison, the three women still do not regret the act -- "They are very strong women and nothing seems to break their spirit," he said.

Egypt Salafi urges U.N. to criminalize contempt of Islam

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's president and other Muslim leaders should demand the U.N. criminalize contempt of religion after the release of an anti-Islamic film and cartoons which demonstrate growing racism, said the leader of the biggest ultra-orthodox Islamist party.

Despite doctrinal and political differences with President Mohamed Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood, the Salafist Nour Party played a key role in supporting it during presidential elections in June.

Led by Emad Abdel Ghaffour, it now ranks as the second-largest party in parliament and plays a formidable force in Egypt's new politics.

"We call for legislation or a resolution to criminalize contempt of Islam as a religion and its Prophet," said Ghaffour, one of four permanent assistants to the president, on Saturday.

"The voice of reason in the West will prevail if there is mutual respect, dialogue and efficient lobbying for this critical resolution," he told Reuters in an interview.

Leaders and their entourages from the 193-nation United Nations General Assembly descend on U.N. headquarters in New York for the world body's annual "general debate" from September 25-October 1.

Mursi will make his Assembly debut along with the new leaders of Libya, Yemen and Tunisia, countries where Islamist parties have moved to the heart of government.

The recent violent unrest in some Muslim countries caused by anger at the anti-Islam film made in California and the French cartoons published by satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo is expected to be a closely watched theme.

A few dozen Egyptians protested near the French embassy in Cairo on Friday, but were kept away from the premises by police. The Nour Party and other mainstream Islamic leaders expressed outrage, but have urged a peaceful response.

Muslim protests in Pakistan turned violent with at least 15 people killed on Friday, after demonstrations in several Muslim countries a week earlier, including attacks on U.S. and other Western embassies and the killing of the U.S. envoy to Libya.

"A proposal to look into the root causes of the obvious racism against Muslims and Arabs as the recent fierce campaign against their Islamic beliefs shows is much needed," said Ghaffour.

DISCORD

Ghaffour blamed interest groups for trying to sow discord between Western countries and newly-elected Islamist governments in the Middle East by defaming Islam.

"A new reality in the Middle East has emerged after the toppling of autocratic regime of Hosni Mubarak and others through democratic elections that brought newly-elected Islamist governments," said Ghaffour.

"There are interest groups who seek to escalate hatred to show newly-elected governments and their Muslim electorate as undemocratic."

His Nour Party plans to produce a documentary film on the life of the Prophet for global release in an effort to counter the California-made film.

Salafis follow a puritanical school of Islam that was revived in Egypt in the 1970s by university students inspired by the 19th century Wahhabi teaching in Saudi Arabia.

Repressed under the rule of Mubarak, the Nour Party emerged from Daawa al-Salafiya (Salafi Call), a movement that has previously only backed preaching, not politics, to spread its purist interpretation of Islam.

Analysts believe Egypt's Salafi movement, whose followers typically wear long beards, has a devoted following of 3 million people and may control 4,000 mosques nationwide. Egypt has around 108,000 mosques and smaller places of worship.

Last week, Ghaffour told U.S. President Barack Obama's Deputy National Security Advisor Denis McDonough in a telephone call that while almost all Egyptians denounced the U.S.-made anti-Islam film, most of the country's leaders and population shunned the violent reactions seen in other countries.

Early in September, the Obama administration planned to go to Congress with a $1 billion debt relief plan to help Egypt stabilize its economy and grow its private sector.

MaMa's Crock Pot Cube Steak | Stacy Makes Cents

Y?all, I have this awesome friend?Tia. She can COOK. You might remember her from the cheesecake post. She used to own a restaurant?did I mention she can COOK? I?m tickled pink she?s sharing a family crock pot recipe with us today. Make it ? you won?t be sorry. With a name like Sweet T ? It?s a Way of Life, you know you can?t go wrong.

A family recipe

My MaMa (pronounced MawMaw, don?t ask me why, that?s just how we spelled it) made this recipe often and I loved it. She wrote it down for me on one of those little spiral-topped pocket notebooks that you used to get from the bank. I still have it, written in her handwriting. She passed away 15 years ago, so this recipe is very special to me.?

Seasonings baby!

The measurements are more suggestions than anything. I do it a little differently each time I make it. Really, you have to just do it to your own liking.? This is SO very quick you can make it up in about 10 minutes.? It?s perfect for putting in the crock-pot when you have a busy day planned and you know you aren?t going to want to take the time to make dinner at the end of the day.

Flour mixture

In a shallow dish or on a plate, combine the flour, salt and pepper. Sometimes I add a little garlic powder or meat tenderizer. Just season it to your liking, although I don?t think something like mint would be a good idea.? But hey, it?s your cube steak.

Olive oil

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Brown in oil

While it is heating, begin dredging the steaks in the flour, coating both sides well, and then place in the hot oil to brown. Turn once a nice crust has formed. While the steaks are browning, slice the onion. I like a lot of onion in mine (they will cook down a LOT!) so I often use two. Again, it?s up to you.

Layers

Next, layer half of the browned steaks, half of the onions, half of the mushrooms, and half of the cream of mushroom soup. And, you guessed it, repeat the layers.

Deglazing the pan

Don?t throw the skillet in the sink just yet though! You will have all those little bits of browned goodness in the bottom of it. This is where the beef broth comes in ? deglaze that pan!? You could use red wine, water and Worcestershire sauce; there are several options for this. Turn the heat up just a tad, pour the broth (or whatever you are using) into the searing hot skillet and scrub the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon to get it all up and mixed together well.

Browned bits of goodness!

When all the little bits are scraped up, pour the whole lot of it over the top of the ingredients in the crock-pot.

Cook that baby!

Even the cooking time and temperatures are variable here. You can cook it on high for 4-6 hours, or put it on low for 8-12 hours. Personally, I like it cooked down so much that the meat is just falling apart, so I go with the longer end of the spectrum.

Crock Pot Cube Steak

This makes a lot of sauce, so I serve it over noodles. And I love this with sour cream; you could mix it in right before serving or just throw some on top of each serving. I serve it with a salad or green beans, although I didn?t get either on the plate for these pictures!

I hope you all love this simple and quick dish as much as MaMa and I!

1 pkg (6-8 pc) cube steak

1 Onion, sliced

2 Cans Cream of Mushroom Soup (Stacy uses?Homemade Cream of Mushroom Soup)

1 Cup Beef Broth

16 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced

? cup flour

? tsp salt

? tsp pepper

2 TBSP olive oil

Sour Cream (optional)

Cooked noodles

?

In a shallow dish or on a plate, combine the flour, salt and pepper.?Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. While it is heating, begin dredging the steaks in the flour, coating both sides well, and then place in the hot oil to brown. Turn once a nice crust has formed. While the steaks are browning, slice the onion.

Next, layer half of the browned steaks, half of the onions, half of the mushrooms, and half of the cream of mushroom soup. And, you guessed it, repeat the layers.

Turn the heat up just a tad, pour the broth (or whatever you are using) into the searing hot skillet and scrub the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon to get it all up and mixed together well. When all the little bits are scraped up, pour the whole lot of it over the top of the ingredients in the crock-pot.

You can cook it on high for 4-6 hours, or put it on low for 8-12 hours.

Sweet T ? It?s a Way of Life

I am a stay at home mom who loves to create ? ANYTHING! I love flea markets, estate sales and my Granny?s house. The name ?Sweet T ? It?s A Way of Life? is symbolic for me in a few different ways. First of all my name is Tia ? hence the Sweet T. And what I do is a way of life, any artist will tell you that. It?s not a hobby or an interest, it?s who I am, what I do. These are the talents that God has given me and it would be a waste not to use them! Then, you also have the fact that I am a Southern Girl and in the South, sweet tea isn?t just a drink, it?s a way of life. It?s who we are, what we do.

Rainfall easing drought in certain corn states

(AP) ? With hopes of a once-stellar corn crop dimmed by a summer of drought, Gerald Jenkins doesn't expect the unfolding harvest to burden his co-op's grain elevators, which are capable of storing 9 million bushels of the grain it buys from growers. Finding timely barges to ship it off may be another story.

The same drought that has punished the Midwest's corn and soybeans for months has lowered the Mississippi River that eases past the western Illinois co-op Jenkins oversees to levels unseen for nearly a quarter century. The shallower waterway ? notably from Memphis south to New Orleans ? has closed some portions of it while forcing shippers to cut the number of barges their towboats push and the amount of freight in each.

That means Jenkins may have to get in line to ship the Ursa Farmers Cooperative's goods on the Mississippi, which is among the major inland U.S. rivers that routinely move some 60 percent of the nation's grain exports each year.

"For us, we just have to be aware we just can't snap a finger and expect a barge to be here," he said. "Instead of two days to get a barge, it may take four or five."

Mitigating matters a bit is that there's less of a corn crop expected, no thanks to the drought that has been the nation's worst in decades but increasingly is showing signs of leveling off and, in some key farm states, easing.

The weekly U.S. Drought Monitor update released Thursday showed that recent rainfall benefited parts of the Corn Belt, coming too late to help already damaged corn crops but still likely to plump up maturing soybeans in the fields.

The report shows about one-fifth of the contiguous U.S. remains in the two worst categories of drought ? extreme and exceptional. The swath still dealing with exceptional drop dropped by less than half of a percentage point as of Tuesday, to 5.96 percent.

While virtually all of the key farming states remain gripped by some form of drought, the amount of Kansas still in the worst drought classification fell by 9 percentage points to 51.04 percent. About one-quarter of Missouri remains in extreme or exceptional drought, down more than 8 percentage points from a week earlier.

And in Iowa ? the nation's biggest corn producer ? nothing really has changed, with 66 percent of that state still in the two most serious forms of drought.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture as of Monday still listed half of the nation's corn crop in poor or very poor shape, down just 2 percentage points from a week earlier. Soybeans were faring a bit better, with 36 percent of that crop described as being in such condition, the same as the previous week.

About one-quarter of the nation's corn harvest is complete, nearly three times the average pace of the previous five years, the USDA said. Just 10 percent of the soybean crops have been reaped, more than double the typical harvest's speed.

Inland U.S. river shipping remains frustrating, given the drought's effects on key waterways.

A year since the Mississippi rose in some places to record levels, traffic along the river sometimes resembling a slow-motion freeway at times has been brought to a crawl, if not a congested mess. Several lower stretches have been closed, and barges have run aground. Other times, towboat pilots have had to wait at narrower channels for a barge to pass through in the opposite direction before easing their own way through, snarling traffic.

A stretch of the Mississippi reopened on Thursday north of St. Louis, five days after damage discovered to a structure near the river's busiest lock forced its closure, causing a traffic jam of dozens of vessels and hundreds of barges.

One estimate put barge industry losses at $1 billion the last time the Mississippi was this low, in 1988 ? little wonder why the Army Corps of Engineers has scrambled all summer to dredge, clearing shipping channels of silt and sediments while knocking down shallow spots.

Newest Kiwanis Park Improvements Celebrated

kit

Over that last several years, Kiwanis Park has celebrated a lot of improvements, including new

softball fields, a new skate park, new basketball courts, and a new playground. This Saturday,

September 22nd, the latest additions to the 34-acre park in Southeast Yakima ? three new

ballfields ? will get a chance to be in the spotlight during a grand opening ceremony starting at

2:00 pm. The park is located at the corner of South Fair Avenue and Maple Street.

The opening of the three new, lighted ballfields, which can accommodate youth baseball as well

as women?s fastpitch and slowpitch softball, marks another step in securing the park?s growing

reputation as a premiere sports and recreation destination.

?Earlier this year the Gateway Sports Complex at Kiwanis Park hosted the Northwest Athletic

Association of Community Colleges women?s softball crossover tournament,? said Yakima Parks

and Recreation Manager Ken Wilkinson. ?It was a big tournament and it was a huge success.

With the opening of the three new ballfields, we anticipate more events of the size and scale of

the NWAACC tournament, or even larger, coming to Yakima,? said Wilkinson.

Other improvements were also made in conjunction with the three new ballfields including

restroom facilities, a concession stand, an additional parking lot, and new playground. In total,

the project cost more than $2.5 million. Funding for the project came from Yakima Rotary,

Lions, and Kiwanis clubs as well as the Yakima School District, the City of Yakima, and the

State of Washington Recreation and Conservation Office (?RCO?).

?The new ballfields, as well as all of the recent improvements at Kiwanis Park, prove that

amazing things can be accomplished when the community joins together to achieve a goal,?

said Wilkinson. ?Kiwanis Park is a great testament to the concept of public/private partnerships.

It really is a facility all of Yakima can be proud of,? said Wilkinson.

Saturday?s grand opening ceremony will take place in the common area connecting the three

new ballfields. Speakers at Saturday?s ceremony will include Assistant Yakima Mayor Maureen

Adkison, 14th District State Representatives Norm Johnson, Yakima School District Board

Members John Vornbrock and Walt Ranta, Yakima Parks and Recreation Commission

Chairman Rod Bryant, Dr. Mike Wilson from the Yakima Kiwanis Club, Dick Elliott from the

Yakima Lions Club, and Steve Pilger from the Yakima Rotary Club.
